As an older Aussie, I’m enjoying reading these ‘archaic’ tales out loud. Such cleverness in the words. The previous commenter has trouble with the reading rhythm, but when I read it out loud, slowly, clearly, enjoying the sounds and rhythms, it becomes a joy. This is the second old text I’m reading this month through SubStack. This is definitely the more flowing of the two. A fascinating start. Thanks so much.
I've been reading back over these and you can tell I teach high school English because I couldn't read a single sentence without mentally annotating for literary devices! What a beginning to a story, I could read it over and over again.
“my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for” hilarious my guy 10/10
What a great beginning! But somehow, even though I've read this several times on my own, I can't help hearing the narration in Gonzo's voice...
I wasn't prepared for how funny it would be! The second paragraph made me laugh aloud. What fun this will be.

I feel like I'm getting the reading rhythm wrong or something. I keep stumbling over the sentences lol.
Fun the way he implies Marley is going to show up as a ghost at some point, before it happens.
