it's hard to read this

"There are some upon this earth of yours," returned the Spirit, "who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name, who are as strange to us, and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived. Remember that, and charge their doings on themselves, not us."

and not think of some present-day hypocrites who claim to be Christians and yet act in hateful ways

The descriptions are so ebullient!! Every item’s details shared with love and joy. And then that final parting shot:

"There are some upon this earth of yours," returned the Spirit, "who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name, who are as strange to us, and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived. Remember that, and charge their doings on themselves, not us."

Some things never change. This Spirit can open many eyes if people choose to listen, to learn. But then that clearly is what Dickens is all about. All those years ago and he could see so clearly the fractures in society brought on by greed and a distinct lack of love.

Aw man, the descriptions of food and the festivities are so wonderful, you can really tell that Dickens had a real passion for Christmas ☺️ also I love the Spirit renouncing any kind of bad deed done in his name!!

The descriptions of the town are so lovely. And Scrooge is probably seeing all this for the first time with open eyes. That's gotta leave quite the impression.

I had to roll my eyes at this exchange, though.

"You seek to close these places on the Seventh Day,"

So, Scrooge is against closing shops on the weekend.

As he only begrudgingly gave his clerk Christmas Day off, this should come as no surprise.

Poor Cratchit.

"There were ruddy, brown-faced, broad-girthed Spanish onions, shining in the fatness of their growth like Spanish Friars, and winking from their shelves in wanton slyness at the girls as they went by, and glanced demurely at the hung-up mistletoe."

Movie adaptations fail to convey how horny these onions are!!
